Vista Diskpart: Extend Volume
Posted by Victor Tong in Hyper-V / Virtual Server, VMware, Windows Infrastructure on June 28th, 2009
I have a W2K3 VM that has a 16GB virtual disk. And I just assign 8GB for the volume. Recently, I found 8GB volume is not enough. I am going to extend this 8GB volume to 16GB volume.
This post is talking about how to use diskpart in Vista Repair mode to extend volume.
Steps:
1. Boot Vista DVD in repair mode
2. Launch command prompt
run diskpart
list volume
3. select the volume that you want to extend
4. Run “extend” syntax
5. Volume extended.
Disappointed to VMware Server 2.0
Posted by Victor Tong in VMware on June 28th, 2009
I used VMware for many years. VMware is a very good software.
After VMware server moving to version 2.0, I started to compliant it in different areas.
One of the most important compliant is the console. The most powerful weapon of VMware is the console. But it is a serious compliant area in VMware Server 2.0.
I am very disappointed to VMware Server 2.0 UI. It is very difficult to use.
If VMware does not run faster, their competitor will replace their leading position very soon.

Different Microsoft Certified Master Programs is coming
Posted by Victor Tong in Uncategorized on June 25th, 2009
Previously, Microsoft created a credential called Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA). That is the ultimated certification for specific Microsoft product. Now, they are creating another certification called Microsoft Certified Master (MCM).
It has too many titles or credential for the Microsoft Certification Path. And the program fee (US$18,500) is very expensive compare with different software vendor certification programs.

Exchange Server Disk Configuration (RAID 5 or RAID10)
Posted by Victor Tong in Exchange Server on June 23rd, 2009
In different Exchange Server projects, different people and parties told me that MS “Best Practice” for Exchange Server disk configuration is RAID10. If you are not using RAID10, you are not following MS Best Practice.
According to these statements, I would like to say something and share my feeling about these statements.
First of all, I do not agree that RAID10 for Exchange Server Disk Configuration is a Best Practice. It is a one of the Disk Configuration for Exchange Server.
When doing Exchange Server Disk Sizing, most people is calculating Disk Size only. Most of the people do not consider the required I/O for the System.
In Exchange Server 2003, its memory usage (DB caching) is not good enough comparing w/ Exchange Server 2007.
After doing I/O requirement calculation, most of the time, RAID 10 will be a best disk configuration for providing required IOPS.
In Exchange Server 2007, its DB caching handling is improved a lot. Disk I/O requirement is less than Exchange Server 2003.
After calculation, RAID5 disk configuration will also have chance to provide enough IOPS for the system.
So, if you are thinking RAID10 Disk configuration is a “Best Practice” for Exchange Server, please think carefully if it is really a “Best Practice” or not.
Calculation provides a real supporting for RAID5 or RAID10 disk configuration justification for your disk planning.
Please don’t close your eyes and suggest RAID10 to your customer blindly and tell them it is a “Best Practice” suggested by Microsoft.
